Grace Owoola Oyin-Adejobi, affectionately known as 'Iya Osogbo,' marked her 90th birthday. She is a celebrated Nigerian actress, producer, and television personality, hailing from Osogbo, the capital of Osun State. Born on August 23, 1930, to a contractor father and a merchant mother, Iya Osogbo began her acting career 67 years ago, long before her notable role in the 1999 film "Eran Iya Osogbo," which earned her the nickname.
Iya Osogbo was married to the late Chief Oyin Adejobi, a distinguished Yoruba actor who passed away in 2000. In a recent appearance on the radio magazine program Parrot Xtra Hour on Radio, Space 90.1FM, hosted by Olayinka Agboola in Ibadan, Oyo State, she shared insights into her illustrious career. "I had already made a name for myself before starring in 'Eran Iya Osogbo,'" she clarified, addressing misconceptions about the origin of her moniker.
Reflecting on her career, Iya Osogbo recounted a memorable incident when an overjoyed fan nearly ran her over in Ibadan. "The fan got out of her car just to greet me and later gave me ten thousand naira," she recalled, highlighting how deeply her work has impacted her audience.
Iya Osogbo also expressed her concerns about the direction of Nollywood today, particularly the trend of near-nudity in films. She advised young actresses to focus on hard work and trust in God rather than succumbing to the temptations of the industry. "Our youths should emulate a lifestyle of moderation and be God-fearing," she emphasized.
She fondly remembered meeting her late husband, Oyin Adejobi, during their youth when they attended the same school and lived on the same street. The loss of her fourth child, a daughter, remains one of the lowest points in her life, she shared.
Reflecting on her longevity, Iya Osogbo attributed it to God's mercy and her disciplined lifestyle. "I have lived to this age by God's mercy and by being moderate in all I do," she said. As she continues to enjoy her old age, she remains an enduring icon and legend in Nigerian entertainment, inspiring future generations with her wisdom and legacy.
In a heartfelt message, her admirers expressed, "Mummy, you’ll live long to reap the fruits of your labor. Your style of living is commendable. You’re an icon and a legend who will be remembered forever. Enjoy your old age; we love you passionately and unconditionally."
