Nollywood actor Abayomi Alvin, widely recognized for his role as Austin in Jenifa’s Diary, has opened up about a significant piece of advice from Funke Akindele that has shaped his career. In a recent interview with Tega Salubi, the actor credited Akindele, whom he fondly calls "Aunty Funke," for teaching him the importance of talent over appearance in the entertainment industry.
When asked if his good looks contributed to his success, Abayomi admitted they played a role but emphasized that they were not enough to sustain a career in Nollywood. He shared how Akindele, during a conversation years ago, warned him against relying solely on his looks.
“She told me, ‘If you think you’re the finest now, trust me, there are much finer people. What will set you apart is your talent. If you want to be an A-list actor and not just another fine boy, you need to up your game,’” Abayomi recalled.
This advice came during a pivotal moment in his career. After initially playing Austin in Jenifa’s Diary, he rejoined the series not only as an actor but also as a screenwriter. Akindele’s words encouraged him to focus on honing his craft and ensuring his talent took center stage.
Abayomi expressed gratitude for the mentorship he received from Akindele and the late Charles Granville, a close friend who facilitated his return to Jenifa’s Diary. Reflecting on their impact, he affirmed his commitment to continuous growth and excellence in his career.
The actor’s story serves as an inspiration to aspiring talents in Nollywood, underscoring the enduring value of skill and dedication over superficial traits.
