Yoruba actors Biodun Okeowo and Jigan Babaoja have shared their reactions to the recent shutdown of TikTok in the United States. The app went offline on Saturday night, leaving over 170 million American users without access, following a Supreme Court ruling that upheld a bipartisan law banning TikTok unless sold to a U.S.-based or allied buyer. The decision, supported by former President Joe Biden, cited national security concerns due to the app’s Chinese ownership.
Jigan Babaoja’s Take:
Currently in the U.S., Jigan humorously lamented the impact of the ban on his entertainment, referring to himself as the “king of TikTok.” He quipped about how boredom would take over and playfully referenced the app’s interactive features, saying, “How a king of TikTok has been dethroned! Now, let the boredom begin.”
Biodun Okeowo’s Emotional Response:
Biodun, on the other hand, expressed deep emotions over the ban. Although she doesn’t earn money from TikTok, she revealed that the app played a significant role in helping her cope with heartbreak in 2021. She still turns to it during low moments. “I can’t believe I’m literally emotional about the TikTok ban in the U.S. This app helped me through heartbreak, and I’m genuinely close to tears right now. I don’t know if anyone else feels the same, but I’ll really miss TikTok,” she wrote.
The reactions from the actors reflect how TikTok has become more than just a social media platform, offering entertainment and emotional support to many users worldwide.
