Veteran Nollywood actress Bukky Wright has made a comeback to the industry after a long break. In a recent interview on Rubbin’ Minds with host Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, she shared her thoughts on the current state of the industry and what she finds disappointing.
When asked about what she is unhappy with upon her return, Bukky Wright pointed to the lack of professionalism. She noted that in the past, actors were trained in various aspects of filmmaking, including continuity, costumes, and call times. However, she expressed frustration over the increasing trend of lateness on set, with some actors arriving hours after their scheduled time.
"At times, call time is 8 o’clock, and you see people coming in at 12 or 11, and you’re wondering what’s going on. Well, they are superstars, maybe we are not. So I end up waiting for them because that’s the way I was trained," she stated.
Bukky recalled how industry training academies used to instill discipline in actors, ensuring they understood every aspect of production. She lamented that such structures seem to be fading, leading to unprofessional behavior.
When Ebuka asked her about the rise of "social media actors" who prioritize fame over craft, Bukky acknowledged that while some lack dedication, others genuinely strive to improve.
"I’ve seen a lot of them who started from social media, but I see the zeal and commitment to be better. And I still see some who feel like they’re up there already. But I’m not their mother or boss to tell them what to do," she said.
Despite her concerns, she expressed admiration for young actors who are eager to learn and improve. She shared that many upcoming talents have approached her, asking to work with her or inviting her to be part of their skits.
Her insights have sparked discussions about professionalism in Nollywood, with many agreeing that discipline and commitment are key to sustaining the industry's growth.
