The issue of electricity in Nigeria has once again become a major topic online after Nollywood filmmaker Kunle Afolayan shared a throwback video.
The video, recorded in 2016, captured a special moment when Kunle Afolayan met with Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, during his first visit to Nigeria. In the clip, Afolayan presented an idea for an app that would help content creators earn money on Facebook based on their number of followers and views. He also spoke about the challenges facing the Nollywood industry.
“So if there’s an opportunity where there’s an app on Facebook where you put content and the amount of follows or views you get is monetised, that will make you a superman,” Afolayan said to Zuckerberg in the old clip.
However, during their discussion, a sudden power outage happened. The moment was caught on camera, showing both Afolayan and Zuckerberg laughing and joking, “This is Nigeria.”
On Saturday, April 26, Kunle Afolayan shared the old video on his Instagram page with the caption:
"With Mark Zuckerberg @zuck a few years ago. Trying to sell the idea of monetization of content on Facebook."
The video quickly went viral, with many social media users reacting to the power failure and criticizing the country’s electricity situation. Here are some reactions:
