Veteran Yoruba Nollywood actress Yetunde Wunmi has opened up about a painful experience from the early years of her acting career, revealing how her passion for theatre led to a heartbreaking personal loss.
In a deeply emotional interview on Talk2Dunnis TV, the celebrated thespian recounted how, just 41 days after giving birth, she made the tough decision to rejoin her theatre troupe for a performance trip. Her story revealed the intense sacrifices she made for her craft—even as a new mother.
A Passion That Overpowered Caution
Wunmi explained that the decision to travel came unexpectedly. She had stepped out for a walk when she saw her colleagues rehearsing. Instantly overcome with a longing for the stage, she asked to join them. Despite concerns from her peers—given her recent childbirth—she stood by her decision.
Knowing her husband would object, Wunmi kept the trip a secret, telling him instead that she was visiting her mother in another town. She brought her newborn along on the journey, managing her role as a performer and mother at the same time. During performances, she wrapped the baby in her costume to shield the infant from cold and handed the child to a caregiver during stage appearances.
A Tragic Turn
Sadly, during one of these outings, her baby fell seriously ill. She rushed to get medication from a pharmacy, hoping the child would recover. Although her boss suggested she return home, Wunmi chose to stay. Unfortunately, her baby passed away shortly after—at just one year and ten days old.
“Anytime I was called to the stage to dance, I would wrap the baby in my costume because it was extremely cold. After one performance, the child developed a high fever… Two days later, my boss advised me to go home, but I refused. Sadly, the child died at just one year and ten days,” she shared tearfully.
A Story of Pain, Passion, and Sacrifice
Yetunde Wunmi’s story is one of deep emotional strength and serves as a reminder of the often unseen sacrifices entertainers make behind the scenes. Her confession has moved many fans, who now see her in a new light—not just as an actress, but as a mother who endured an unimaginable loss in the pursuit of her dreams.
