Former Ogun First Lady, Lucia Onabanjo, Dies at 100

Madam Lucia Onabanjo, wife of the first civilian governor of Ogun State, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, has passed away at the age of 100.


The news of her death was announced on Tuesday, January 13, by her daughter, Olubukunola Onabanjo. According to the family, Madam Lucia died peacefully on Monday, January 12.


In a statement released by the family, they expressed deep sorrow over her passing but also gratitude to God for her long and fulfilled life. The statement described her as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who left behind a strong legacy of faith, love, and strength.


“She lived a long and fulfilled life, and we thank God for the impact she made and the values she passed on,” the family said, praying that her soul rest in perfect peace.


Madam Lucia Onabanjo was married to Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, who served as Ogun State’s first civilian governor from 1979 to 1983. He was also a respected journalist, widely known for his popular weekly column, Ayekooto, before his death in 1990.


Her passing marks the end of an era for the Onabanjo family and Ogun State, as many remember her for her grace, longevity, and quiet support for her husband’s public service.
