NCoS Arrests Two Suspected Drug Peddlers for Attempted Smuggling in Ondo Prison

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Ondo State has arrested two suspected drug peddlers for allegedly trying to smuggle illegal drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Olokuta, Akure.

The suspects were arrested during a routine security check at the entrance of the custodial centre. Their identities were not made public as investigations are still ongoing.

Confirming the arrest on Wednesday, the Ondo State Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Mr Charles Oyewole, said correctional officers discovered about four grammes of suspected Indian hemp hidden inside fresh tomatoes brought into the facility.

Oyewole explained that the substance was carefully wrapped in a waterproof nylon and was meant to be delivered to an inmate. However, the attempt was stopped during the security screening before the items could enter the prison.

He said the arrest followed the directive of the Controller-General of Corrections, Mr Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, who has continued to stress the importance of strict security measures in all correctional centres across the country.

Commending the officers involved, Oyewole praised their alertness and professionalism, describing the arrest as proof of the service’s renewed commitment to security and zero tolerance for contraband.

He added that the suspects have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Oyewole also warned members of the public, especially visitors to custodial centres, to stay away from any act that could compromise the safety and security of correctional facilities.
