“Senate Didn’t Reject E-Transmission of Results” – Abaribe

The Senate Minority Caucus has dismissed reports claiming that the Senate rejected the electronic transmission of election results during the passage of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill.

This clarification came less than 24 hours after lawmakers were criticised over claims that the Senate had thrown out proposals allowing electronic transmission of results and a 10-year ban for vote buyers and other electoral offenders.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, said the caucus decided to speak out because of what he described as widespread misunderstanding of what happened during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Abaribe stated clearly that the Senate did not reject electronic transmission of election results. According to him, the Senate actually approved electronic transmission as already provided for in the 2022 Electoral Act.

He stressed that reports suggesting otherwise were inaccurate and misleading. Abaribe added that the Senate President had also clarified this position during the plenary session, confirming that electronic transmission of results remains part of Nigeria’s electoral framework.

The caucus said the clarification was necessary to correct public perception and assure Nigerians that the Senate did not reverse existing provisions on electronic election result transmission.
