Cultural ambassador Farooq Oreagba opens up about his cancer battle as he marks World Cancer Day

Cultural ambassador and style icon Farooq Oreagba has shared a touching story about his quiet battle with cancer, revealing how a routine hospital visit changed his life.

Speaking on World Cancer Day, February 4, Oreagba said that on February 3, 2014, he went for a medical scan out of caution, even though he felt fine. A week later, the result confirmed he had stage one multiple myeloma, a cancer that affects plasma cells in the bone marrow.

He explained that the diagnosis came as a huge shock, as there was no history of cancer in his family and his youngest child was only two years old at the time. Despite the fear and uncertainty, Oreagba said he made up his mind to fight the illness.

He began chemotherapy soon after and underwent a successful stem cell transplant in August 2014. On February 4, 2015, exactly one year later, he was declared cancer-free and in complete remission, a moment he described as unforgettable.

However, his journey did not end there. Oreagba revealed that he continued chemotherapy for seven more years, completing a total of eight years of treatment in August 2022. Today, he only attends routine checkups every three months.

Oreagba said he now lives with deep gratitude, purpose, and appreciation for life, encouraging others to remain hopeful and strong in the face of health challenges.
