English Championship Play-Offs Expanded from Four to Six Clubs Next Season

The English Football League (EFL) has approved a major change to the Championship play-offs starting from next season. The play-offs, which previously involved four clubs, will now include six teams.

Under the new system, the top two teams at the end of the regular season will still be automatically promoted to the Premier League. Teams finishing third to eighth will enter the play-offs for a chance at promotion.

EFL chief executive Trevor Birch explained that the decision came after months of discussions with clubs and stakeholders. He said the change is designed to strengthen the Championship as a competition and give more clubs and fans a real opportunity to compete for promotion.

The new format will introduce “eliminator” matches for teams finishing fifth to eighth. Winners of these matches will then play against the third and fourth-placed teams in two-legged semi-finals. The exact details of the final match format will be confirmed later this year.

This expansion is expected to make the Championship more competitive and exciting for supporters across the league.
