Nollywood actor Olaniyi Afonja, popularly known as Sanyeri, has opened up about the tension between his love for acting and his parents’ expectations, revealing that he now regrets not pursuing further education.
In a recent interview, Sanyeri explained that his parents strongly believed formal education was the only path to success and were opposed to his involvement in the entertainment industry. Being caught on a movie set or at rehearsals instead of attending school often led to strict punishments. “There was a day Iya Niyi [my mother] came with a cane to beat me on stage,” he recalled. “My hands and legs were tied during a performance in front of the audience and my fans.”
Despite the public embarrassment and family pressure, Sanyeri said he could not abandon acting, which brought him personal fulfillment. Eventually, he left home to live with his employer at the time, continuing his journey in the film industry.
Reflecting on his experiences, the actor expressed regret for not advancing his education sooner. He acknowledged that his parents’ strictness was rooted in their concern for his future, but emphasized that he now understands the importance of balancing personal passions with formal learning.
Sanyeri’s story highlights the challenges young talents often face when following their dreams while meeting parental expectations, and underscores the value of lifelong education and perseverance.
