Suspected bandits have kidnapped eight people in Garin Idi village, located in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Among the victims are relatives of the Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Idris Mohammed Gobir.
According to local sources, the attackers arrived around 1:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2026, riding about eight motorcycles. They reportedly fired gunshots into the air, causing residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
Residents said the attackers operated freely in the village for about two hours without any security intervention. One resident described the incident as one of the most frightening experiences in the community, saying people have become used to frequent attacks but still live in fear.
Another eyewitness said the bandits first gathered about 30 people, mostly women and children. They later released some of them but went away with eight victims due to limited space on their motorcycles. The abducted persons include three men and five women.
The victims were identified as Hassana Adare Maifata, Rabi Alhaji Ishaqa, Kwamuso Umar, Yar’aji Garba, Kabiru Alkasim, Sani Muazu, Jadi Alkasim (a patient), and another woman believed to be a close relative of the deputy governor.
The attackers also raided a phone charging shop in the village, stealing more than 100 mobile phones, power banks, and about ₦40,000 in cash. The shop operator reportedly fled when the attackers arrived.
Community members have appealed to the government and the deputy governor to urgently address the rising insecurity in the area. They expressed disappointment that despite having a high-ranking political figure among their relatives, they continue to suffer repeated attacks without effective protection.
The incident adds to growing concerns over worsening security challenges in parts of northern Nigeria, where rural communities remain vulnerable to bandit attacks.
