Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has revealed that her life would have been very different if she had not found success in music, admitting that she believes she would likely be unemployed today.
Speaking with culture and style platform EE72 ahead of her Boiler Room performance, the 24-year-old star reflected on her rise to fame, her journey with Mavin Records, and the challenges of living in the spotlight.
Ayra Starr, whose real name is Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, jokingly said that without music, she would probably still be living comfortably at her mother’s house, enjoying her mother’s food rather than pursuing another career. She added that she does not see herself becoming a content creator because of the amount of work involved.
The singer also recalled the excitement she felt when she discovered that Don Jazzy and the Mavin team had been listening to her songs before officially signing her to the label. According to her, knowing that such respected figures in the music industry were paying attention to her work was a thrilling moment.
Ayra Starr further opened up about the pressures that come with international fame. She admitted that she sometimes wishes the public knew less about her personal life because she tends to speak freely during interviews and often feels she shares too much information.
The Grammy-nominated artiste said she struggles to hold back once cameras start rolling and believes she occasionally overshares during media appearances.
Since joining Mavin Records in 2020 after being discovered through her acoustic covers on social media, Ayra Starr has grown into one of Africa’s most successful music exports, earning global recognition and building a strong international fan base.
