The management of Kwara State Polytechnic has suspended a lecturer who was seen in a viral video flogging candidates of the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) programme who arrived late for their examination.
The incident, which surfaced on social media on Monday, showed the lecturer using a cane on several students, sparking widespread outrage online. Many critics condemned the use of corporal punishment in higher institutions and called for disciplinary action.
In a statement released by the institution’s spokesperson, Hajia Halimat Garba, the management confirmed the suspension of the lecturer pending further investigation.
The school clarified that the individuals seen in the video are IJMB candidates, not regular polytechnic students, and explained that they had arrived late for their ongoing exams.
While the motive behind the lecturer’s action remains unclear, the institution strongly condemned the use of physical punishment, stating that it does not align with its values or disciplinary standards.
The management emphasized that education should be based on respect, guidance, and proper conduct rather than violence, and assured the public that appropriate steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The lecturer has been suspended indefinitely as investigations continue into the matter.
