The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) khaki uniform with locally made Adire as part of ongoing reforms aimed at promoting Nigerian products and supporting the local economy.
The Minister explained that the decision is in line with the government's efforts to strengthen local production, revive the textile industry, and ensure that public funds are spent on goods produced within the country.
According to the minister, Adire is proudly made in Nigeria, with producers and textile manufacturers operating in states such as Ogun and Kwara. He stressed that the government wants to invest more in local businesses instead of relying on imported materials.
He said the production of the new uniforms will be carried out entirely in Nigeria, a move expected to create employment opportunities, boost the country's textile industry, and encourage greater patronage of Nigerian-made products.
The minister also revealed that the Federal Government is restructuring the NYSC deployment process. Under the new plan, corps members will be posted to places of primary assignment based on their academic qualifications, professional skills, and areas of study to improve productivity and national development.
The announcement follows the Federal Government's approval of comprehensive reforms to the NYSC scheme on Monday, June 29. One of the major changes approved is the appointment of a civilian Director-General, replacing the long-standing practice of appointing military officers to lead the scheme.
The reforms are expected to modernise the NYSC programme while promoting local industries and improving the effectiveness of national service across the country.
