President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure a peaceful, transparent, free and credible governorship election in Osun State scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.
A total of 15 candidates are contesting the governorship seat, including incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu urged INEC to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that the election is conducted in an orderly and transparent manner.
The President also challenged the electoral commission to use the Osun election as an opportunity to demonstrate its level of preparedness for the 2027 general elections.
According to Tinubu, the election represents the final off-cycle governorship poll before the 2027 elections and should therefore serve as a test of INEC’s ability to conduct credible elections.
Tinubu also directed the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies deployed for the election to provide adequate protection for voters, electoral officials and other participants.
He warned that troublemakers must not be allowed to disrupt the electoral process, stressing that security personnel should ensure maximum security at polling units.
The President further urged residents of Osun State to exercise their civic rights without fear or intimidation, emphasizing that both voters and electoral officials must be protected throughout the election.
The call comes as political parties intensify preparations for Saturday’s closely watched poll, with the outcome expected to determine who will govern Osun State for the next four years.
