British Columbia Temporarily Halts Admission of Nigerian and International Students to Tertiary Institutions

The Canadian province of British Columbia has implemented a two-year ban on admitting Nigerian and international students to tertiary institutions. This decision, disclosed by Federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller, aims to reduce new student visa issuance by 35% for the current year. The measure is part of an effort to combat "exploitative practices" within the education system, according to Miller's statement.

Premier David Eby emphasized the importance of addressing issues within the international education system, acknowledging its significant role in the province's social and economic framework. Eby highlighted the need for all institutions, regardless of size, to meet expected quality standards, pointing out concerns with certain institutions not meeting these expectations.

In the first half of 2023, nearly 18,000 study permits were granted to Nigerians in Canada, making Nigeria the second-highest recipient after India. The temporary halt on admissions reflects British Columbia's commitment to addressing challenges within the education system while maintaining quality standards.
