Renowned Yoruba Nollywood actor and producer Afeez Owo has shared a touching story about one of the toughest times in his filmmaking career. In an interview on Kunle Afod’s official YouTube channel, Owo opened up about the financial struggles he faced early in his career.
In 1999, while producing a film, Owo found himself in a dire situation when he ran out of money to pay his cast and crew. Desperate for help, he turned to film marketers in Idumota, Lagos, but all three marketers he approached rejected him. "I didn’t even have money to return to the film location," he recalled.
Heartbroken, Owo began walking from Idumota to Ojuelegba, lost in thought, when suddenly a car hit him. Though the driver and bystanders offered to take him to the hospital, Owo, consumed by his financial troubles, asked them, “Do you have money to pay for my treatment if you take me there?”
Just when he thought things couldn’t get worse, a kind stranger came to his aid. In an unexpected turn of events, the very film that caused him so much hardship went on to become his breakthrough project in the industry, ultimately bringing him into the limelight. "That movie brought me to the limelight," he concluded, reflecting on the struggle that turned into success.
