Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is reportedly set to officially join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This was disclosed by a top official of the ADC in Abuja, who said plans are already in motion for Obi’s defection. According to the source, Obi is expected to formally declare for the party at a rally scheduled to hold in Enugu on December 31.
The official revealed that Obi’s supporters and loyalists have already begun preparations for the move. He added that the former Anambra State governor had recently met with the ADC’s National Chairman, David Mark, after the party asked him to clearly state his position on joining the coalition about three weeks ago.
The source explained that the party’s stance and structure may have influenced Obi’s decision to finally align with the ADC. Earlier, on December 7, the party had reacted to a statement attributed to Obi in which he described the ADC as unstable, urging him to make up his mind on whether or not he wanted to join the coalition.
Speaking further, the party official said the ADC is aware of Obi’s plans to declare for the party in Enugu, even though he has not yet officially notified the party leadership.
When asked why Obi chose Enugu instead of Anambra State, his home state, the official explained that Enugu is widely regarded as the political capital of the South-East. He added that Obi’s decision reflects his intention to represent the entire region, not just his state.
If confirmed, Obi’s move to the ADC could significantly reshape political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
