Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has announced her intention to run for Governor of Ogun State.
Speaking on “Frontline,” a programme on Eagle 102.5 FM in Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State, she confidently declared, “I’m going to win.”
Iyabo Obasanjo recently returned to active politics after a 15-year break. She joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and formally declared her governorship ambition. She previously represented Ogun Central Senatorial District from 2007 to 2011.
A trained epidemiologist and former Ogun State Commissioner for Health, she lost her re-election bid in 2011 to Gbenga Obadara of the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). After that defeat, she returned to the United States, where she focused on her academic career and later became a professor.
During the interview, Obasanjo said her goal is to fix gaps in governance and improve the lives of Ogun residents. She stated that she has always lived a life of giving more than she takes and believes her leadership will positively impact the people.
“The position I’m going to run for is governor, and I believe it fits the skills I bring to the table,” she said. “I hope that when I’m governor, I will touch your life either directly or indirectly in a way that will improve your lives.”
She added that she does not intend to use gender as a political advantage. However, she promised to support the emergence of a governor from Ogun West after her tenure. Reaffirming her confidence, she repeated, “Yes, after me, because I’m going to win.”
Addressing possible challenges, Obasanjo admitted she joined the race late and may not have as much funding as others. Still, she expressed belief that voters will choose competence over money.
“I don’t think money makes elections. I believe people are good people, and they know who will do right by them,” she said.
On her chances of securing the APC ticket, she maintained that while nothing is guaranteed in politics, she will do everything possible to emerge as the party’s candidate.
Her declaration sets the stage for what is expected to be a competitive governorship race in Ogun State.
