The Lagos State Government has announced the indefinite closure of the outbound section of Eko Bridge leading to Lagos Island for safety investigations and repair works.
According to the state government, the closure will officially begin on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. The decision was made to allow engineers carry out important structural checks and maintenance on the bridge to ensure the safety of motorists and other road users.
The announcement was made on Sunday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi.
Following the closure, motorists travelling through Apongbon and Ijora Olopa have been advised to make use of the Third Mainland Bridge as an alternative route to reach their destinations.
Despite the shutdown of the outbound lane, the commissioner explained that the inward Lagos Island section of Eko Bridge will remain open for traffic movement.
Oluwaseun Osiyemi also assured residents and commuters that adequate traffic officials and security personnel would be stationed along alternative routes to help control traffic and ensure smooth movement during the repair period.
The government urged motorists to cooperate with traffic authorities and plan their journeys properly to reduce congestion and delays caused by the temporary closure.
