Lionel Messi made history on Monday night after becoming the highest goalscorer in World Cup history, scoring twice to help Argentina national football team secure a 2-0 victory over Austria and book a place in the knockout stages.
The Argentine captain endured an early setback when he missed a penalty that was awarded after a VAR review found a foul on Lautaro MartÃnez. However, Messi quickly bounced back and opened the scoring in the first half, finishing calmly from a low cross delivered by Facundo Medina.
The goal was a historic one, as it took Messi’s World Cup tally to 17 goals, moving him ahead of Miroslav Klose to become the tournament’s all-time leading scorer.
Messi was not done yet. The 38-year-old added a second goal in stoppage time to seal the win and increase his tally to five goals in just two Group J matches, following his hat-trick against Algeria in Argentina’s opening fixture.
Austria, who won their first group match against Jordan, put up a spirited fight and created some challenges for the defending champions. However, they lacked the finishing quality needed to find a breakthrough.
The victory sees Argentina move to the top of Group J and strengthens their chances of finishing first in the group as they continue their defence of the World Cup title. Meanwhile, Austria remain hopeful of progressing to the next round despite the defeat.
